Annapolis InterClub Fleet
Annapolis ICers,

A record 14 ICs turned out for the Series 1 finale! It was sunny and near 50 degrees with a light southeasterly blowing. Bugly ran 7 races (and one practise race) with the starting line near the academy sea wall. It was a little hectic dodging all the AYC boats and the disturbed air they generated could be disasterous. Look for an article in this weeks Capital on our fleet!

As expected, the Nelsons and Falsone/Jones had a dog fight for top honors in Series 1. Whenever IC 694 and IC 802 (bow 2) were close, one was sure to slam dunk or try and drive the other back. As it turned out, OCS's by both teams forced them out of contention for the top spot of the day. Instead, Ray Wulff sailed well to walk away with the win with two bullets, a second and a third. Neither the Nelson's or Falsone/Jones sailed well enough to have the day count for the series, so Falsone/Jones held on to narrowly win Series 1 by seven tenths of a percentage point! It should be noted that the Nelsons bested Falsone/Jones on five sailing days, but only by an average of 2.4 points. This was not enough to overcome Falsone/Jones' 20 point victory over the Nelsons during Day 9. Although Corckran/King were absent the last two weeks, they held on to third place for the series. Mike Mergenthaler and Kim Couranz were close behind in fourth.

Another great story of the day was the return of the gray boat (Kim Brickell's IC 239) to the front of the pack. With Rusty Deane at the helm and Kim working the boat (and the traveler adjusted properly), they finished the day with a 1, 3. While taking the scores, Kin Yellott expressed the sentiments of all the sailors when he said that "it was a long time since that boat has seen the front of the fleet...". Watch out for "Rescue 911" at the Midwinters with Rusty and All-American brother, Robby Deane driving the boat.

Thirteen boats qualified for Series #1, and two others were just a day short of qualifying. We averaged 10.55 boats/day with a low of 7 and a high of 14. We sailed 57 races (not including practise races) and averaged over 6 races per day. Only one day was canceled due to lack of wind! Compare that statistic to any other IC fleet!
