Series 1 Day 2 was another classic. Thirteen boats turned out for 9 races. The weather was positively beautiful with sunny skies and temperatures in the 50's. Winds were variable from the northwest.
Two "new" boats made their debut. Tom and Tara Stout's IC 527 finally splashed down with a new paint job, mast and rigging. Tom did a fantastic job refurbishing this boat and it was great to see him out sailing after a long rehabilitation from a shoulder injury. Jervis Dorton's IC 270 spent a week in the shop getting completely stripped and painted. The topsides look perfect after they were faired and painted with a high-gloss finish. The big question now is how much weight did ol' 270 lose?
Some new IC sailors were also out. Ex-collegiate all-star Maria Coppola sailed with Allan Freedman. Maria claimed she was rusty, but didn't look so as she rolled hard on the rails through tacks and gibes. Anna Nelson replaces Nick Nelson this series sailing with her father, Macy Nelson.
The sailing was no less intense than it has been all year. Falsone/Jones came out hot winning the first two races (the second by a large margin) with the Simonds second. Macy and Anna countered with wins in races 3 and 4. Race 5 was the undoing for Falsone/Jones when their new Waterat tiller snapped during the leeward mark rounding. Alex and Lisa Pline began a hot streak winning 3 of the next four races with Macy and Anna staying close behind. Freedman/Coppola sailed consistently all day placing in the upper half of the fleet in 8 races. In the end, with Falsone/Jones out of their hair, Macy and Anna walked away with the win and a 90.5%! The Simonds occasional flashes of brilliance put them in second, but far behind the leader with a 76.2%. The Plines were close behind in third with 74.6%.
The remainder of the season should be interesting. The newly established B Division (for sailors with a 65% or less in Series 1) should see some great competition in the middle of the fleet. Falsone/Jones will have to sail flawlessly to catch Nelson/Nelson with fewer days in this series. Corckran/King and Ray Wulff have both proved to be major contenders as well.
