Annapolis InterClub Fleet
Annapolis ICers,

Series 2 Day 7 was one crazy day! The breeze was expected to be from the south but blew from the northwest. The course stradled the Severn and Spa Creek, so shifts were quite dramatic. Bugly set a good course based on the median breeze which was no easy task considering shifts of 50 degrees were common. A record ten races were sailed. For those of us who chose to wear dry suits, you learned how effective they are at keeping sea water out and sweat in (yuck). Unless you capsized, the best call for the day was shorts and a t-shirt.

The fleet is again showing superb development and the sailing is quite competitive. Six boats won at least one race this Sunday and eight had at least one top two finish. As competitive as the sailing was on Sunday, sportsmanship was very evident on the course. This is the hallmark we should always strive to attain each week. We also had numerous first-time ICers this weekend and I'm confident that the fleet can continue to grow under the right leadership.

Also, everyone should thank Jonathan Foot and Jonathan Lange for filling in on the crash boat. Our scheduled crash boat crew were no-shows, so they took it upon themselves to trade off on sailing time so that we could race.

Again, victory went to the most consistent sailors. Aden and Phebe (#403) have always been among the top finishers and staying in the top half of the fleet was the key to their success. Six top three finishes gave them the win and 86 points (78.2%). Rusty and Randy in the gray boat had 5 top three finishes to put them in second with 82 points. Macy and Anna had some success with 4 top three finishes and 81 points. Jesse and Diane Goebes were extremely inconsistent, but did come up with two wins to place fourth with 74 points. Allan Carscaddon (sailing the Pline's boat) won 4 races, but a vang breakdown caused them to miss three races putting them out of contention. It's a good thing for Alex that Allan could take all the kinks out of his boat before the nationals. Allan Freedman sailing with newcomer Lauren Maher had a win and a second to their credit. Jonathan Lange's moment in the sun was shattered when he fouled a boat at the weather mark in a race that he was winning. Keep at it, Jonathan! Jonathan Foot sailed with first-timer Ed Freitag (Mumm 30 owner) and scored a second and a third in 5 races sailed.

The keys to success seemed to be a good start and finding the breeze. No one side was favored all the time because of large shifts and varying velocity. Changing gears was also important because the wind was so variable. A loose vang (as Ray suggested last week) was probably a good call when it was very puffy.
