Annapolis InterClub Fleet

Annapolis ICers,

For those of you who said it was too wet and windy to sail - you missed a great day! The wind gods obviously demanded a sacrifice, and they got one when Tom and Tara Stout left the club. Jamie Brickell learned from experience not to leave too early! Nine boats turned out for some lumpy seas and winds gusting to 15 knots which eventually died as the day went on. Maybe it was me, but the rain also seemed to taper off while we were sailing.

Bugly sailed us in the harbor again, and while I prefer to be outside, the chosen racing area provided some interesting racing. The chop was a big factor. Other tactical considerations were current and wind shifts coming off the SSA docks and navy breakwater. The fleet was about as close as it's ever been, and mark roundings were very tight. If anyone has any insights as to what tactics were fast and why, please send a message to the list! Personally, I think that speed in the chop was paramount. Keep that outhaul loose! See some additional suggestions for speed in chop here.

Jesse Falsone and Sam Rosemont came out hot with a 1,3,1 by keeping the boat moving fast in the chop. The Simonds found the high gear in races 2 & 3 on the right side upwind and near the breakwater downwind. The big winners turned out to be the Plines. With three firsts and a second, Alex and Lisa showed great speed all day (probably the new tiller). Ray Wulff and Maria Coppola had a slow start but finished very strong with a 3,2,1,1 in the last four races. Aden King and Phebe Corckran also sailed with consistency to place near the top (note - Alex Pline has a few score corrections to be made).

A few of us will be out in the coming month. Macy, Jesse and Barney will be in Florida doing some 505 tuning. Alex and Lisa will miss two weeks for the Snipe Midwinters and Jamie and Sue are going to the Carribean on vacation. However, there are still plenty of ICers to make a good fleet. What's more, the scores are very tight from second to ninth place overall, and a few drop days will definately change things around significantly. If we sail all nine days, five sailing days will be needed to qualify. We could have as many as 17 qualifiers this series!

Have you done your RC day yet? Jonathan Foot will hunt you down if you haven't. The IC Nationals are coming April 18&19. See the Winthrop IC page for details:

Tom Stout graciously handed out a rules quiz. Anyone take it?
