Annapolis InterClub Fleet

Opening Day Regatta Results

The opening day regatta is our season kick off. We sail an A/B style regatta with the intention of teaming up potential fleet members with current members. Races 1,2,5,6,9 were the A group and 3,4,7,8 were the B group.

Annapolis ICer's:

Those who missed the InterClub Opening Day regatta should be kicking themselves today. Besides beautiful sailing, the day featured the debut of new IC Fleet members and boats, the experience of sailing in close quarters with boats weighing 100 times the weight of the IC, and the excuses of Alex Pline, fleet secretary, explaining that he still deserved the "I have never capsized" asterisk, even though your correspondent saw him swimming around next to an IC with its masthead in the water.

As the IC sailors congregated at SSA, the breeze was strong and gusty. Amidst some trepidation, the fleet was off, some getting off the dock a little more quickly than others. Eventually nine boats and 12 teams found their way out to the starting area and enjoyed 9 races.

The racing featured the debut of Matt Cottrell, sailing with Cecily Natunewicz, both from the marine biology department at U. Del. Matt was sailing his new IC #801. We also were able to entertain a number of potential fleet members. Latane Montague joined us and spent time in both Jesse's boat and boat 422, which was sporting a deep (Yale?) blue. Dustin Romey also had a chance to sail in a couple of boats and found 422 to his liking, winning the last race after taking the start with the old "my rudder fell out at 0:30 before the start trick" to lull everyone else into complacency before darting to the lead.

In the last few races, the IC fleet was joined by AYC's PHRF racers heading to and from their start and finish in Spa Creek. The resulting mingling of the fleets led to some close encounters and perhaps some tense moments. I can now state with some authority that it is not fun to be rolled by a boat many times your size. Jamie Brickell gave no quarter, however, hailing "starboard" when it appeared that his rights were in danger and benefiting from his insistence.

It was a pleasure to see everyone out on the water and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on the water when the season begins in earnest next weekend.

Best regards,
Allan Carscaddon
