1999-2000 InterClub Results - Series 1, Day 8
January 16, 2000

Greetings - As you all know, we had a tremendous day of racing with sun, 55 degrees and winds at 5 to 20 out of the west. The keys to success seemed to be staying clean at the starts and on the course, not only with fellow IC's but also the Lasers and other big boats out there. Nancy and I really focused on keeping our heads out of the boat keeping an eye on the overall traffic and the breeze. We basically tried to see where the next shift or puff was way up the course and sail towards it. The puffs had a lot of velocity to them, so we did not try to determine whether it would be a lift or header, we just tried to get to them. Once we got there, ( I know this sounds stupid) we pointed the bow to the mark, regardless of what the competition was doing. A couple of times we got pinned under people who did not want to tack on a 20 degree header and this hurt. In retrospect we should have tacked anyway and gone behind them. Other than those two races, we had all top 3 finishes becuase we were able to stay in control and make the decisions we wanted to make. Interclub racing is awesome becuase it puts a premium on short course racing and every move you make is instantly magnified as either good or bad. We always tried to play the low percentage risk move so as not to screw up. For example, coming into the weather mark on port with 4 or 5 starboard tackers, we would go behind them and follow them around rather than stick it in there and hope to get around with out fouling or not making the mark. I watched a lot of people do that and they payed the price. Once around the mark, the 4 or 5 infront of us would be in a clump, we rounded right behind and seperated just a little in a puff and would usually pick up 2 or 3 boats.

As far as boat handling and boat speed was concerned, we tried not focus on these to much. An IC is a big fat slow pig and never really feels good, even in a big puff. Don't get me wrong, I love the boat, but while racing I always try not to look at other boats to gage speed, only position. We stick to the basics of roll tacking, keeping the boat flat and powered up. We do play the vang in the puffs. Vang on in big puff, vang off coming out of it.

Hope some of this is helpful! Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday!

Thx. Henry.
