1999-2000 InterClub Results - Series 2, Day 7
March 26, 2000
The courses were very short, so you could not afford to give anything up at the start. In our worst race,we started in the 2nd row and it was a one tack beat. We should have anticipated the major lefty that came down, as the Lasers had the exact same start before us. You could not wait for the breeze to come to you, you had to get to it!
Down wind puffs were coming down from both sides. The key was to figure out which puffs were moving the quickest and if there was any shift to it and then try to position yourself accordingly.
Perhaps the most memorable moment came on the last run of the last race. We rounded the weather mark 4th ( by not digging into the left hard enough). The first 3 boats kept going straight on the same jibe. We jibed to the inside and worked a small puff down the run. While on port jibe we managed to establish an overlap as the other boats jibed off of starboard onto port and we all started to converge. While at first glance we were quite happy to stay on port, be inside boat and go around the mark, that was not a wise plan. A major puff came down from the left with just a few boat lenghts to go to the mark. It was not only a big blast, but a good 20 degree shift as well! Right before the puff hit, we anticpated the shift (we finally got one right) and jibed to starboard just in time. Once the puff hit we had right of way (inside and starboard tack. The outside boats were on port tack in a major puff and could not jibe for fear of capsize, they were pinned and the carnage ensued.
Whenever possible, always try to think a couple of moves ahead. By anticipating a possible scenario before it happens, you may be able to give yourself some options you otherwise would not have had.
See you all next week.
