2002-2003 InterClub Results, Day 2 November 30, 2003
The first REAL day of frostbiting was won by Bryan Fishback! Scores were
all over the place with everyone having a deep finish or two. Without
stealing Bryan's thunder, here are some highlights: Jon sailed his best
day to date. Jill learned what a roll tack was. Wayne's scores with 4
thirds would do well in poker. Alex blew a good day by missing the first
race and still owes Lisa for sailing with him. Celeste went first to worst
in one race. Gavin learned the secret to downwind speed. Paul needs a
bigger bailer. Jesse's mast is still dry.
Bryan's Report
I don’t know who said it, but it was like that old saying; “If I knew I was going to live this long, then I would have taken better care of my self”. However in the case of last weekend’s IC racing, it was more like, “ if I knew we were going to win for the day, then I would have paid closer attention to the scores”. Ironically, it often seems to happen that my best performances occur when I don’t over-analyze or think too much about how or what I am doing. Last Sunday was a perfect day for being in the moment. It was Diana’s (Markel) first day in an IC, so our(my) expectations were low. We didn’t feel any pressure to perform to any level and we were excited just to be out there. The harbor was full of boats and at the time I couldn’t imagine anything else I would rather be doing.
There was a light southwesterly to westerly breeze that struggled all afternoon to fill in across the harbor. The wind came over the houses and trees of Eastport and dropped down onto the course in small fanning puffs. Sometimes these would drop down on the left and sometimes on the right. If the pressure was from the left, then shift was from the left, if the pressure was from the right then the shift was from the right. If we were not near the pressure, then we would head over to it. If it slipped by us, then we started looking for the next one. We tried to stay in the pressure on the lifted tack as long and as often as possible. The puffs were fairly compact so we did not wait long to tack onto the lift once we got into the pressure. The times we did wait too long, we lost boats.
That really is as much as I remember, except that we generally were up on the line at the start always looking for the pressure.
After looking at the results, I am reminded of a few things that I would like to point out. While some of the finish results don’t reflect it, at some point, every one of the eight boats out there lead a race. Jon Guth and Celeste Simonds won a few races and that was very good to see. The conditions were at times frustrating, but the racing was very tight and most importantly, I suspect everyone out there couldn’t imagine anything else they would have rather been doing.
