Comet
The Comet was designed by C. Lowndes Johnson as a trailerable version of the Star. The design combines a 16 foot hard chine planing hull with a classic sloop rig with a distinctively large mainsail. The result is a boat that can plane downwind and on a reach in just 10 to 12 knots of wind, yet remain stable upwind.
The boat carries a crew of two for racing, making it ideal for husband and wife or parent and child teams, yet it
can hold four adults for pleasure sailing. The boat is easily trailered, rigged and launched. Even more importantly,
the Comet is one of the most affordable one-designs in its class, with fully equipped and competitive used boats available for about $2,000.00.
As important as the boat itself, it is the people that make Comet racing really enjoyable. The members of
SSA's Comet Fleet #40 range in age from 25 to 66 and in skill from novice to expert racer. Regardless of age
or skill, each member believes the emphasis of the Fleet should be on having fun, before, during and after
racing. While the competition out on the race course is as intense and challenging as in any class, the
overall atmosphere among the Comet Fleet members is extremely casual, and those members with more experience
and expertise are happy to share their knowledge with newcomers.
Comet Fleet #40 races six regattas at SSA beginning with the Jack Peters in May and concluding with the
Pumpkin Bowl in October. The Fleet also participates in regattas held in St. Michaels and Oxford in August. If you are looking for an enjoyable and rewarding sailing experience and would like to find out more about the Comet and Fleet #40, contact the fleet captain comet@severnsailing.org.
