Fleet
Party and Fall Series Recap
Thanks to those of you that partied on at the fleet summer party on Aug
30th. Everyone seemed to have a good time and it was nice to get
together and rehash the big events of the summer.
A special Boo-Yah to all of you that came out and sailed this past
weekend. Sunday turned out to be a great late summer day on the
bay and the racing was extremely close. Special hoots and hollers
to Heather and the rest of her lady crew of Carol Park and Nicole Rauzi. Might there be another Hurban
his/her two boat campaign for Heather and Jason?.?.
Next up for those travelling is Solomon's
SMSA Regatta Sept. 20-21st.
Hopefully all of you will be racing at our Frigid Digit Regatta on
Oct 18-19th. Joe will be sending out a task list shortly for
the F.D. Mark your calender now and
plan on being there.
Thanks,
Steve
George Shapiro Memorial
No Gas Invitational
17
boats sailed at SSA last weekend for what turned out to be 2 excellent
days on the water, despite a sketchy forecast. Sat started light
but built to a gusty 10-15 out of the NW, and Sunday also saw a gradual
build to 15+ of the SE. 7 races were completed in all, with
our local North Rep Allan Terhune winning
5 of them to easily coast to victory for the second year in a row.
Crewing for Allan were his wife Katie and
Kimberly Brickell.

and full results here.
Doc Gilbert Potomac Cup
held May 2-3
25
boats sailed over at Leesylvania St. Park
at this annual memorial regatta to Doc Gilbert, a long time Fleet 50
member. Allan Terhune won all 5
races, and Jon Guth was second on the tiebreaker with Dick Hallagan from upsate
NY. Steve Constants
was fourth, and Jason Werner
finished fifth. Great, breezy sailing both days, with sunday getting lighter for the last race.
Other fleet 329 members that participated were Jason/Heather Werner in
5th, Gary Hurban, Jonathan Lange/Alister Thomson, and Joan Hurban.

Spring

Fleet
Meeting held March 4
Steve Constants, who has agreed to serve as
Fleet Captain for another season, hosted our spring fleet meeting at
his house.
In attendance
were Jamie Brickell, Joe Friebele, Mark
Whitson, and Jon Guth.
We reviewed
the schedule, assigned regatta chairs, and discussed basic structure
and requirements for each of the Invitationals.
More information to follow as each Regatta approaches.
We also
discussed recent fleet additions (Joan and Gary Hurban!), crew
development/involvement, a summer fleet party, a new blog for better communication, and the
possibility of some coaching sessions.
More detailed
minutes were circulated to all fleet skippers via email.
'07 Frigid
Digit draws 40 boats again!
The 56th annual Lightning Frigid Digit once again had great
participation, both from within the Dixie District as well as from
boats as far away as Wisconsin
and Toronto.
Our own Fleet 329 had 13 boats competing, a very strong turnout.
Larry
Macdonald (Toronto, CA)
with 15 year old daughter Joy and 13 year old son Adam won the regatta
with some very consistent sailing by one point over our own fleet's Al
Terhune (Annapolis,
MD) with wife Katie and John Townsend down from Philadelphia. David
Starck (Buffalo,
NY),
sailing with Cory Sertl and Brian Taboada were third, one-point back from
Allan. The regatta came down to the last race, last beat to the
finish, with Starck winning the race, Terhune finishing 7th, and Macdonald 8th, barely
good enough to hold on for the regatta win. Both Al and David
have won this event several times.
Other Fleet
329 top- ten finishes included Jon Guth in 7th, Steve Constants in 9th,
and Neal Fowler/Todd Johnson
in 10th.
Thanks again
to Joe Friebele,
Regatta Chair who really has this regatta down now, to everyone in the
Fleet who helped Joe, and to Mark Hasslinger,
PRO, and his race committee who did a stellar job in very shifty
conditions.

The 2007 NAs's, hosted by SSA, EYC, and Fleet 329 was a
tremendous success!
Thank
you to everyone in the Fleet who helped make
this one of the best NAs in recent class memory. And thank you to all
SSA members who moved their boats to make space for this regatta.
