From the Director

Dear Parents and Sailors,

At the Severn Sailing Association Junior Club, we pride ourselves on quality sailing instruction. For over thirty years, we have been teaching children to enjoy the lifelong sport of sailing. Safe, responsible boating is a priority at the Severn Sailing Association. You will find this reflected in our course curriculum as well as the attitudes of our instructors.

Our parent club, the Severn Sailing Association, is volunteer run. To that end, the Junior Club encourages teamwork, sportsmanship, volunteering, and a commitment to excellent one design sailboat racing. We offer a wide variety of programs with seamless transitions between each. If your child has never been in a sailboat before, we’ll make their first experience enjoyable and safe.,If your child has won national championships, we will challenge them. If your child is anywhere in between, we have a place for them.

Our goals at SSA are to encourage children to participate in sailboat racing while teaching them the skills needed to excel. This year, SSA will focus on making sailing a year round activity for our juniors. Outside of our summer program, we offer opportunities to frostbite in the 420, as well as chances to participate in winter regattas in Florida. During the spring and fall we offer sailing programs for students at area high schools as well as fall Optimist sailing. In November, SSA hosted the All Girls Clinic where 16 area females had a chance to train with Olympic hopeful Molly O’Bryan. Look for more clinics like this in the coming year.

We are spending the winter refining the summer program, while improving our facilities and equipment. SSA will incorporate an environmentally responsible aspect to our summer program. We will also focus on training responsible sailors in regards to equipment, themselves and each other. The goals of the SSA junior program are that our students will learn to sail and contribute as an active member in a volunteer run athletic club.

The SSA junior program is dependent on the efforts of parent volunteers. If you have any interest in volunteering with regatta help, boat transportation, logistical support, or in any capacity at all, please don’t hesitate to call the office at 410-263-0071. I’m looking forward to the summer program. See you in June, if not sooner.

Sincerely,

Brent Ostbye
