Opti Classes
Beginner Optimist classes are offered in two week sessions throughout the summer to sailors between the ages of 8-11 years old. This course is designed to teach students who have little experience the basic skills needed to sail. In an environment where fun, safety and teamwork are paramount, students are introduced to: Wind awareness, Sailing terminology/rigging, Points of Sail, Tacking, and Gybing Cost: $
Optimist Racers compete in regattas hosted by clubs around the Chesapeake. Classes will be conducted at SSA on non-regatta days. Racers can sign up for 4 week or 8 weeks sessions For a list of events where coaching will be provided, please contact the Director. Students must bring their own boats to class and SSA boat storage fees will apply. Teams will be divided into Green and Championship Fleets. In this course, students will practice skills necessary to become proficient racers such as: Starting Techniques, Boat Handling, The Racing Rules of Sailing, and Racing Tactics. Cost: $600/4wks or $1100/8wks. |
To

Harbor
Rookies is a one week course designed to give the
youngest sailors in our program an introduction to sailing and
the Chesapeake Bay. Instruction will be in Optimists, with two
sailors per boat. The class will be comprised of students ages
6-8. Emphasis will be placed on teamwork and enjoying everything
that the Bay has to offer. Cost: $200
Intermediate Optimist classes are offered in 4
week and 8 weeks sessions and designed for sailors between the ages
of 8-11 years old who have completed
at
least two two-week sessions
of the Optimist Beginner course. In this course students will become
proficient in all points covered in the Optimist Beginner course.
They will also be introduced to:
Weather,
Sail Trim,
Hull Trim, and
Equipment Maintenance. Cost: $550/4wks or $1000/8wks
