Day Sailer Spring Series

Mother’s Day weekend at SSA for Spring Chesapeake racing gave us two distinctly different days. Saturday saw a new high pressure come in with a DS upper limit, steady 15-18 NNW, and gusts into the 20’s. Sunday found the Classic Bermuda high and sadly, no wind. A perfect power boat day!

Thanks to expert recruitment by DS Fleet Captain Jeff Seltzer, we got 11 boats registered, including 2 out of town boats. Brian Bush was down from the Cape for daughter, Mary Bush’s graduation from Georgetown Law (congratulations Mary) and Gary Ogden was up from Richmond, sans daughter Jenna Ogden, who was in Boston.

Thanks to Joe Van Gieson and small but veteran RC crew we got 4 races in on Saturday with the Melges 15.

Racing was by all accounts Sporty on Saturday. The first 3 races were dominated by Kanaka. Robin Richards and brother Bruce were untouchable up wind and down. Eric McCaffery and Chan Owen were on her heels but even in the heavy air conditions the boys in Bail Out couldn’t catch Kanaka. Third place was a battle between Chris Lewton and LeAnn Myhre in Nina and Matt White and new to the class crew, Josh Shields.

The athletic day went on and Robin recovering from the flu, was struggling with her breathing. Hoping for a throw out, Robin elected to skip the last race. Unfortunately you know the rest of the story and Sunday racing never occurred. So a good a trivia question might be, how do you win 3 races in a 4 race regatta and come in 4th?!?

The true beauty of the DS fleet was seen on Sunday, even with a wind delay and the prospect of no racing growing more likely, there was no shortage of tips, tricks and laughs being shared.
