Founded in Tradition, Filled with Fun! The ILCA Dinghy is one of the most popular dinghies in the world. It debuted at the New York Boat Show in 1971. ILCA Dinghy Fleet 10 was formed in 1972, and that same year the inaugural Sunshine Open and Crab Claw Regattas were held at Severn Sailing Association. The ILCA Dinghy became a men’s Olympic Class at the 1996 Olympics and the women’s Olympic Class designation followed in 2008. At present we have 115 SSA members in ILCA 6 and 7 Dinghies! .

We name a fleet champion each season. Here's how to qualify:

  • Competitors must sail in four out of the seven scheduled events.

  • Competitors must sail in at least one SSA Club Series event and one Invitational event.

  • Competitors may only use one Frostbite Series score. Note: Competitors will only receive a score for a Frostbite Series if they sail in at least half of the races in that series. Race Committee duty is considered a race day for qualification purposes.

TESODs at SSA

ILCA Dinghy dominate SSA's informal "TESOD" (Tuesday Evening Sailing One Designs) from May to September. If you like racing, don’t want to both scrambling to find a crew, and want to sail with a great bunch of competitors on the most popular and widely sailed one-design sailboat, then ILCA Dinghy Fleet 10 at SSA is the place to be.

SSA also hosts major regattas for the ILCA Dinghy Class such as the Atlantic Coast Championships and the District 11 Championships. The club's central location allows fleet members great access to events up and down the East Coast. We often have 15 to 20 sailors attending major regattas and masters' events. Our members range in age from the teens to over 70. What other class can boast that? The ILCA Dinghy is a boat you can sail for life.

Each season, ILCA Dinghy Fleet 10 holds seven events: two invitational regattas; a spring, summer, and fall series; and a two part winter "frostbite" series (sixteen Sundays between November and March). Here’s some action from past seasons!

The ILCA Dinghy is in its fifth decade as a simple, one-design racing dinghy.

The boat can be rigged in minutes, trailered or car-topped to events, and launched just about anywhere. It can be sailed in three different configurations: the standard rig, the radial, and the 4.7. In each case the hull is identical and only the bottom mast section and sail are changed to create a completely new class. This is known as the ILCA Dinghy Formula.
