Double-Header Weekend for the Day Sailers

by Matt White

What better time to feature two summer regattas than early August then when the heat breaks and gentle NNE harbor breeze makes for perfect light air conditions for the DS Summer Series and the AYC Two Bridge Fiasco.

Saturday for the Summer Series the Day Sailers joined with the Snipes and their “Dick C Cup.” The regatta is set up and run on short courses just off the SSA bulkhead. With many teams on vacation we only got 5 boats registered. Notable for the summer series was new Fleet One daughter/father team of Lauren and Dave Scheone and their strong second place finish. Morgan and Matt were first and Jeff and Gabe Seltzer were third.

Sunday’s Two Bridge Fiasco

A Fleet One favorite, the 7.8 mile distance race that requires rounding both the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Severn River Bridge. With 7 teams registered and 6 boats on the line, the start is the fiasco, as two boats started on starboard heading to the Severn River Bridge Bridge and 4 boats started on port heading to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The Bay Bridge proved the faster route with Morgan and Matt finishing first, Bill and Collette finishing second and Erik McCaffery and his crew Mark Ragland finishing third.

In light breeze and with a 5 minute head start the Day Sailers were able to finish strong, hold off charging Harbor 20’s and notch a couple top 10s.
