Day Sailer Atlantic Coast Championship
It was an exciting weekend of competitive racing this weekend at SSA, the Day Sailer class partnered with Hospice Cup PRO Barbara Vosbury to run out our ACC’s. While the ACC's were supposed to be a stand alone event, we did not want waste top RC talent on 10 boat fleet. J22, Harbor 20s, Day Sailers, Melges 15 and Snipe all started and raced on one course. Thanks to Barbara and her team and using appendix U, Day Sailers were able to start 3rd and never had an issue with interference for other boats sailing essentially the same course.
While predicted to be light on Saturday, the breeze filled in nicely, inspiring skippers to plead with crews to hike harder. With a windward mark set near Lake Ogleton and an oscillating breeze from SE, strategy and tactics proved important. Races were tight and everyone had a great time.
The other notable fact this weekend was that 6 of the 10 teams were led by women skippers, in fact the top 4 skippers were women. Long time DS family skipper Erika Seamon won, with husband Bruce Artman, second was new to the Day Sailer fleet, Lauren Schoene sailing with her Dad, Dave Schoene, third was Morgan Wittrock and her Dad, Matt White and fourth was Robin Richards and Cathee Lee. I am not sure there is another class that can boast so many top women skippers, it certainly seems to be an opportunity for growth.
